Researches say that using computer for long hours is bad for our eyes & it affects our vision and sleep, but if your job demands you to sit in front of a computer for a long time, just like us, you should consider enabling Night Light Settings in the Windows. Couldn’t find the settings? Here’s what you can do – download f.lux.
F.lux is the software that was designed keeping in mind the need of Night Mode or different light settings during the evenings / nights. This features now is the part of Windows, but if you are using old version of Windows or you are on a different OS (Linux, Mac) you can install F.lux. The purpose of these settings/programs is to reduce eye strain during nighttime use and to prevent disruption of normal sleep patterns. Here’s more about Flux.
Computer screens emit a blue light that is supposed to make your screen look good as they are designed to look like the sun, but if you’re working late night you probably shouldn’t be looking at the sun. The exposure to blue light at night-time keeps people up late & as a matter of fact the bluish light that comes from screens was designed to be used during the day. F.lux adjusts colors in a way that greatly reduces the stimulating effects of blue light at night.
F.lux makes the color of your computer’s display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It automatically adjusts your screen’s color and brightness each evening based on the sunset time in your location. There’s no need for any additional hardware, all you need is, to set your zip code, or latitude and longitude to get the program to work properly, based on a user specified set of longitude and latitude geographical coordinates/ ZIP Code/ city name, it fetches data to check the status of sun at your location and then makes changes accordingly. In the settings you could adjust lighting for the day & night, set your location and set transition speed. If you’re doing some color sensitive work you can disable F.lux for one hour or until the sunrise. You also have Movie Mode, which tones down the color effects for 2.5 hours. This tool is very effective for old versions of Windows, as it can manage the screen brightness to a level that’s lower than one can set in the Windows power option.
F.lux is available for Windows, Mac, Linux , iPhone/iPad and also for Lights. Yes! You heard it right, if you have A Windows computer connected to the Internet & A Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance starter kit, you can actually control the lights – dim or shut them with Flux. You can know more about it here.
I believe once you use it, you probably wouldn’t want to go back. It’s very useful especially if you work at night. It’s free, it’s effective and it cares for your eyes and sleep.
